Makeup Education :D

I hope your week has been so far so good.  Today, I will be educating us on some terms used by makeup artists that may confuse us sometimes.  I learned some of these from makeup school, some from using Google  and others from experience.

MATTE- This is used to describe lipsticks, eye-shadows, foundations, etc. that have no shimmer, no shine and appear flat.

CONTOURING- This takes attention away from a feature and makes it less visible.  A contour shade is usually a shade darker that gives the features more depth and definition by contrasting them against the lighter shades used on the face and around the eyes.

CAKEY- This describes a product that appears thick, dry, flakey, crusty, and dehydrated when applied on the face.

DEHYDRATED- This means to suffer loss of moisture.  Dehydrated areas of the skin lack moisture and suppleness, making them appear older.

SKIN ELASTICITY- This is the skin’s suppleness and ability to remain firm, visually tight and youthful.

SKIN ELASTICITY TEST- This is a test to see if your skin is functionally younger or older than your biological age. To do this test- pinch the skin on the back of your hand with the thumb and forefinger of the other, and hold it for five seconds. Let go and time how long it takes for the skin to flatten back out. The shorter the time, the younger the functional age of the skin is.

T-ZONE- This is the center of the face which includes the center of the forehead, nose and chin.

SKIN-TONE- This describes the skin color and it ranges from very dark brown to almost colorless.  Skin-tone is determined by the amount and depth of the pigment melanin in the skin.

UNDERTONE- This is the underlying tone of the skin.   The types of skin undertones are; warm, cool and neutral undertones.

Cool – Red, Pink or Bluish Tones

Warm – Yellow or Golden Tones

Neutral – Both Red & Yellow Tones

VEIN TEST– This is one way to determine your skin undertone. In natural light (during the day, stand by an open window), make a fist and examine your inner wrist. Veins that are mainly blue are a sign of being cool toned, green veins are a hint of being warm toned, while veins that are a mix of blue and green could be a sign of having neutral tones.

JAW TEST- This is a technique in which multiple stripes of foundation are applied to the skin to test whether or not it’s color matches the skin color.

I hope someone is ’11 make-up terms’ smarter today.  Stay tuned for more make up tips.

Be Fabulous!
